I lost my ability to put computer in standby mode. The standby box is not
its usual colorful status. Additionally my Z705 printer needs to be
restarted after turning the computer back on which was not normal. Any
suggestions? Your help would be appreciated.

No Standby could be because of 2 reasons. First one is incorrect VGA drivers
and second could be because of inproper Power Management settings under BIOS.
USB Printer problem could also be because of BIOS settings. Try one thing to
solve both problems.

1. Restart your computer and press DEL to enter in CMOS (BIOS) setup (or
press the key required by your BIOS like F2).
2. Here check the settings of Power Management and under Advanced BIOS
feature USB Controller.
3. If you can not understand anything then LOAD BIOS DEFAULT settings. Save
and Exit.

Hope this help, let us know!

Please help me out with the terms CMOS& BIOS and how to get response to DEL
and F2 . I am a beginner when it comes to these operations.

Ok!

Before you move to a some long procedure, I suggest you to check something
out and reply me.

First Step:

Right-click on your Desktop and choose Properties. Click the "Settings" tab.
Here not down the Screen Resolution and Color Quality. Here is one more thing
you should not out e.g. Display: Plug and Play Monitor on Intel (R)
82845G/GL/GE/PE/GV Graphics.

If your colors are lower than 16 Bit or there is no Display Adapter name
after Plug and Play Monitor then you have to reinstall the VGA drivers from
the Motherboard CD. Insert the CD. If there is an Auto Run function in the CD
then you will see a entry like VGA or DISPLAY drivers. Just install that
particular entry. after restarting see if Standby works.

Second Step: (If first doesn't work)

Restart your Computer through Start - Turn Off Computer - Restart. Now, the
very first screen is here that you see everytime when you start your
computer. This is called the POST screen. You can press "PAUSE" key stop the
screen. If it is a normal post screen then you can see a message in the
bottom area of screen "Press DEL to enter setup" or "Press TAB to see post".
If this is not a normal POST screen and have a company's logo only then press
TAB. Mostly all BIOS (Basic Input Output System) require DEL key to enter.
Hopefully with your BIOS as well. Press DEL (or it could be F2. Read the key
in bottom corner. Once you enter in the BIOS then locate a funcation
something like "LOAD SETUP DEFAULTS" or "LOAD BIOS DEFAULT" settings. Move
with the arrow keys and press Enter key. Press "Y" one asked. This load the
factory default settings of BIOS. If you can't figure out then here could be
somthing like "Power Management" option. Enter in this setting and check if
ACPI or APM is set to disable then Enable it through Page Up or Page Down key
or by Pressing Enter. Get out from that menu and press F10 to save the BIOS
settings and reload the Windows. See if Standby works now.

Step 1 I have plug and play as you describe and also 32 bit color.
Step 2 I cannot come up with what you call the POST screen.

If you want me to help you out then you have to give me a complete
description. You only specify that monitor type which is "Plug and Play". Is
there nothing else written after "Plug and Play Monitor on.......". If there
is nothing else then the problem could be with your Display Drivers only.
What you need is the Motherboard CD that comes with your PC. Just insert the
CD and you will see an option to install VGA or DISPLAY Drivers. Only 32-Bit
colors not enough for Standby to work. Windows must know that what Display
Adpater you are using to work properly. Furthermore, if you didn't solve your
display drivers then you will also face some problems in other graphic
programs like Games.

About POST screen? This is what you see when you turn on your PC like
information about your BIOS manufacturer, Processor Speed, Amount of RAM
installed etc. or just the company logo like HP. If your computer is too fast
then chances are you will not able to see this. If you want to check out the
settings of your BIOS then turn on your PC and try hitting DEL key at the
same time to enter in the BIOS. The key will be different to enter in BIOS,
depends on your BIOS. Here you have to check out some settings. If you are
not sure what to do then here is an option about "LOAD BIOS DEFAULTS" OR
"LOAD SETUP DEFAULTS".

Hope this information is useful to you, let us know!

I did find the proper DEL key and was able to get into the BIOS screen. I
proceeded to do the default procedure and restarted. No cure yet but I
intend to go back and try to find the Power Mgt screen within BIOS and see
what I can do. Just wanted to let you know that I am learning more about
computers and that your advice is appreciated.

The Plug and Play is Intel (R) 82845G/GL/GE/PE/GV Graphics.. Researching the
sites you reference indicate I have a wrong driver being utilized. I don't
know if this sounds valid. Can I reinstall drivers without losing everything
on my hard drive?
You mention the motherboard CD. Is that the recovery disk that comes with
the new computer?

Your display drivers are seems to be ok. You have to check to 2 more things.

I am talking about your Motherboard Driver CD not the Recovery Disk. You
have to check for it, if you want to recover from this problem by yourself.

First, you have to re-install your Chipset Drivers (called INF drivers) from
your motherboard. See if this helps you.

Secondly, you to re-check the Power Manaement Option within from BIOS. If
you don't know what to do in BIOS, try loading Default BIOS settings (using
Load Setup Defaults or Load Optimal Defaults option). Save the changes and
exit from BIOS and then check if Standby works. The problem could be only
because of these 3 things (PowerManagement, Chipset Drivers & Display
Drivers).
