When I click Start | Shutdown | Standby, I get a message box "System Standby
Failed" with the following text:

"The device driver for the Communications Port Com1: device is preventing
the machine from entering standby. Please close all applications and try
again. If the problem persists, you may need to update this driver."

I checked out Com1: in Device Manager which says it's working properly. I
have a DSL which is always on.

What's going on?

Hi, PT.

What's going on is that in order to achieve various sleep latency states
such as Standby or Hibernate, EACH and EVERY device in the machine must be
capable of communicating various things about itself (through the use of
drivers and\or firmware):
This is the bus I'm on
This is where in the bus I am located
This is what kind of device I am (Class driver)
This is what functionality I am capable of (filter driver)
This is what sleep states I'm capable of
This is the current sleep state I'm in.

If one of these questions cannot be answered then that particular device
will prevent your machine from entering sleep latency. So, if you could
have the WinXP enter Standby before and cannot, try taking out the device
which you have connected to the Serial or Com port and remove it. Try
Standby afterward, and it will likely work.
