It would be wonderful if there was a standard spy definition that was used
by ALL companies that produce Anti-spyware programs. In the old days there
were ANSI standards for just about everything but with the advent of PC's
that came to an end.. If there was a standard, each differrent spyware
program would not show different results. It would require a pooling of
information and would definitely aid the consumer. It is needed to prevent
us from having to have several programs on their PC''s. Wouldn't that be
great.

There was an earlier attempt to bring together industry players around such
issues, which failed. There's a current attempt, which you can read about
here"

They published a definitions proposal for public comment, and are presently
at work on finalizing the results from that. It wouldn't surprise me if the
timing of that effort relates to the timing of a future release in this
beta.

You can download their definitions proposal as a pdf from the above site.

Bill Sanderson expressed precisely :
Well - they are a part of this coalition, right?

Yes, this time it´s OK for MS to make standards beacuse of MSN and some
other important partners using adware in the greyzone, next project
which is more important about W3C they are not interested.

But this standard will probably be worth nothing, a paper which
says nothing probably.

I'll plead guilty to not having read this 13 page paper in detail, for a
variety of reasons. I've printed the sucker and will now do so.

I expect this paper to have sufficient objective detail as to help Microsoft
out in court when it comes to that--i.e. define what the vendor and academic
community sees as defining spyware. We'll see what the final draft looks
like in October.

plun, thanks for the info. It wasn't widely publishized and that is the
sorry part of the situation.
