Stacking hard disk drives vertically?

I own a dozen plus IDE hard disk drives (each ranging from 40GB to
250GB), started "collecting" them since about 2 years ago. I rarely
burn stuffs to CDs/DVDs nowadays (scratches, slow access speed, the
hassle of putting discs in and out of the drive, etc) and that's why I
keep buying new hard drives instead.

I haven't used USB enclosures or removable racks, so I stack unplugged
drives vertically (5-8 of them on each stack). Is this dangerous for
the disks? I remember a friend of mine saying that you shouldn't put a
harddisk directly above another (let alone several disks above one).

I believe he would have been talking about heat when inside the case, it's
best to seperate them a little to allow airflow.

Thanks Michael.

What about stacking them when it's not used lying on the desk, would
there be any negative effect (i.e. data loss, reduced lifetime) when
putting hard disks in a high stack?

Thanks.

They're more likely to fall over if the stack gets too high... Aside
from that, no.

I think I'd want to put little stick-on rubber feet between them s
they don't slide against each other and to minimize externa
vibration, but I've run multiple HDs stacked for short periods o
time without any issues

Those that can't afford a Lian-Li case can mount up to 4 or mor
drives, space permiting, vertically by mounting them as per th
Lian-Li cage bebind the input fan/s via just the bottom two screws o
any drive with no problems at all

measure the screw hole length centre to centre, mark and drill fro
the bottom, too easy for cool high speed 10K Raptor HDD's and rai
setups

They will hold tight and work fine NP at all

The only no no's are moving a spinning drive or running them at a
angle
