This "stack overflow at line 1029" error message has occurred twice. Once
today and once a few days ago. Today it happened on amazon.com. I do not
know what site I was on the first time. I click OK, the message goes away,
and things seem normal.

Is this a problem? If so, is it my problem or the site's problem? Is there
anything I should do?

David

Hi David. Are you using any plugins or third-party toolbars with Internet
Explorer? These may be causing the error as such an error (stack overflow)
would be unusual for such a mature and well tested product such as internet
explorer.

Usually when an error occurs in IE you are prompted to send an error report
to Microsoft. Since you did not mention this it seems to indicate that the
error did not occur in IE but instead in another program that is hooked into
IE.

The next time the error occurs make a note of what is on the Title bar of
the error message (this is usually the name of the program where the error
occurred) and gather as much detail you can to help us diagnose a remedy.

You will find an option to disable third-parth Browser Helpers (Toolbars) in
the Internet Options control panel on the Advanced tab. If you disable them
and then reload the web site in question and the error does not occur then
you can be sure that this was the cause of the error.

stack overflow at line 1029 is usually a Java related error. It is brought forward on occasions when the site accessed has a fault in their code. Nothing to worry about on your end.

Hi Rob,

Thanks for your answer. The title bar said "Microsoft Internet Explorer"
and the was only an OK button. I guess from another google search that the
problem is in the site that I visited.

Hi Peter,

Thanks for your answer. I will forget about it.

I have been experiencing similar "stack overflow" errors from IE6 with no
send error report to MS. The overflow line is not unique when the error
occurs.

---------------------------
Microsoft Internet Explorer
---------------------------
Stack overflow at line: 189
---------------------------
OK
---------------------------

The only thing I have been able to do is to install another browser
(Firefox). This seems to work fine.

I have noticed that once the stack overflow error occurs in IE, java links
on the viewed page no longer function.

I am running IE6.02900.2180.xpsp_sp2_gdr.050301-1519

I have tried running sfc , but it made no difference.

I found article 895194 relating to IE6 stack overflow errors, but I haven't
found the hotfixn yet .... and this may or may not fix it either.

FYI the errors did not start until after the last automatic update.

Can you shed any more light on a fix?

Thanks ............ Jim

I had the exact same problem at Amazon.com; I found this discussion thread
by googling "stack overflow at line:"+1029

I believe I have seen it once before, but I don't recall where.

Yes, I have a few IE plugins, but not much special as far as I know. Just
the usual plus Google, Yahoo, and ICQ toolbars.

Hi Steve,

The ICQ toolbar also replaces the SearchHook engine in IE. The SearchHook
engine pre-processes the web address entered in the address bar to make sure
it is well formed or to lookup the address from a shortcut. It could be that
the ICQ toolbar can't handle the urls at amazon (who knows for what reason)

Unfortunately when you remove the ICQ toolbar (uninstall) it does not revert
to the IE SearchHook engine.

A registry tweak is available at
http://www.iecustomizer.com/SearchHookFixDownload.htm

It would be interesting to see if others have experienced this problem have
also had the ICQ toolbar installed at some time or another.

Hi All,

It appears that I was finally able to restore Internet Explorer 6 by
removing Symantec AntiVirus, about 30 copies of the Sober worm, and then
installing Avast Antivirus.

I found that the LiveUpdate feature on the Symantec AV was copying and
blocking deletion of the worm.

It seems whatever was causing the "Stack Overflow" and loss of use of any
javascripts on the page, has stopped and IE seems to be working normally.

You may want to scan your machine just in case ... I keep my virus
definitions up to date and still got hit.

I hope this may be of some use to you.

Thanks for the help ............ Jim
