I remember using a program a while back that worked your system to the max
by working the guts out of your motherboard, processor and ram giving you a
report on how it faired eg. accuracy, crashes etc.
It was fantastic for comparing system reliability. Is there a freeware
version around?

CPU Burn-in

"CPU Burn-in v1.01 by Michal Mienik is the ultimate stability testing
tool for overclockers. The program heats up any x86 CPU to the maximum
possible operating temperature that is achievable by using ordinary
software. This allows the user to adjust the CPU speed up to the
practical maximum while still being sure that stability is achieved even
under the most stressful conditions. The program continuously monitors
for erroneous calculations and errors ensuring the CPU does not generate
errors during calculations performed under overclocking conditions.

New! Version 1.01 adds second mode that stress tests CPU even further.

AND

HeavyLoad V2.0

"Heavyload is inteded to stress all resources of a PC (like CPU, RAM,
harddisk, network, operating system, etc.) in order to test, if it will
run reliable under heavy load. This is useful for testing important NT
file or database servers before using them productively, or just to check
if your new PC might get too hot when used intensively. To stress your PC
or server, HeavyLoad writes a large test-file to the temp folder, it
allocates physical and virtual memory and it draws patterns in its
window."
