1. Does XP have a random sound that sounds like someone stepping on a
squirrel's tail? Every ten to twenty minutes or longer. Not associated with a
click.

2. I get the temperature readings when booting. When running is there a way to
see them?

3. The holes for an auxiliary case fan are 70 mm apart. Does that mean I would
need a 70 mm fan? CPU is currently running at 41° C. in a cool room. I'm
wondering if when the room temp goes up 10° F. will the CPU temp also go up
that much? Is setting the shutdown temp at 55° C reasonable?

4. I have S.M.A.R.T. disabled. At one time I knew what that was but have
forgotten. Should it be enabled or not?

And, yes, I know it is a mistake to ask more than one question per message! <g>

No, certainly not. That should be checked out promptly. Locate it's source.
Whence does it come? your speakers or your case?

Download and install Motherboard Monitor 5 (MBM5). It can be configured to
show your CPU temp constantly in the systray. (As well as more other info
than you can shake a stick at). That's how I have mine set up.

No, a 60mm fan. That is a fairly small fan for a case-fan. If you're going
to get one get a good quality one.

a cool room. I'm wondering if when the room temp goes up 10° F. will
the CPU temp also go up that much?

Probably. In my case I get a degree-for-degree rise in CPU core temp equal
to the rise in ambient temp.

What is your CPU? Where is the temp being read from? On-chip diode or
socket? (At the moment my CPU socket temp is 40°C and my CPU diode 52°C) For
AMD XP CPUs I set the shutdown for 85°C if it's reading CPU diode temps. All
XPs are specced for at least that although personally I'm not comfortable
running them consistantly above 65° for extended periods.

SMART monitors your HDD(s) for signs of pending failure. I always use it if
I have the option, it can be invaluable for warning you if your HDD starts
throwing up errors, give you the chance to save important data.

Nah, it's okay. However, more information on your system specs would have
been nice.

If the 70mm measurement is of horizontal or vertical holes, not the
diagonal measurement, then it's for an 80mm fan. If the measurement _IS_
diagonal, then the 60mm fan.

You're right there. For some reason I jut assumed it was diagonal. Probably
wrongly I'd say, most case fans are 80mm although I've seen older cases with
a place for a 60mm fan.

Thanks for being more precise on that.
