I have tried to use help in the Windows Vista calculator for "find Square
Root". The answers 60 of them address everything but.

Any clues?

sqrt?

The square root is actually the same as the power of 1/2. So use the "x^y"
on the scientific calculator.

In your case "2" "x^y" "0.5" "="

The sqrt button is only in the standard view. In the scientific view, you
need to use "x^y".

You've GOT to be kidding! PLEASE say you are.

Click the sqrt key....?

Square Root of 2 is 1.14142135623730950488016887242097

I seem what you mean thought; help is not "Help" relevant to Calculator.

Can't swear to Vista, but on Win7 (and I seriously doubt it was any
different on Vista) the button is in plain view. In the both the
"Standard" and the "Scientific" view, the square root (identified by the
√ symbol) button is directly below the M- button and immediately above
the % button.

Thanks everyone. We were in a hurry so the Auditor accepted the serial
number on a dollar bill that she selected randomly from my billfold.

It works, but what is it and why does it work?

Keyboard shortcuts for calculator.

If you look under 'Can I use the keyboard to control Calculator' on this
page (or within Vista's 'Help and Support'), you'll spot the 'i' and '@'
.....

I had to look 'em up too. Not the sort of thing you'd really remember,
unless perhaps you used it extremely frequently.

Not the same on my Vista.

In Standard view, the button is two buttons to the right of digit 9, and is
labeled sqrt instead of –.

In Scientific view, there is no sqrt or – button; you have to check Inv and
choose the x^2 button, third from the left on the bottom row. When you
check Inv, the labels don't change - rather primitive, I'd say.

[I had to switch to Dialog to send this because MesNews gets upset with the
'–' symbol :-( ...Another problem to solve (later, not now)]

That's reason enough to upgrade to Win 7! 8^)

If you insist :-)

BTW, I have a calculator in the sidebar that *does* have a SQRT button
- it has the full symbol with an x inside. It's so modern that it takes
my breath away - so maybe I will stick with Vista.

Weirdly enough, when I go to its scientific mode, it takes me online
and I find myself running it in a browser window. Works OK, so I don't
really care.

It's at http://www.ecalc.com/calculator, but I guess I originally found
it in the Sidebar's gadget search (I don't remember). It's not free or
it is free, the site confuses me...
