I am writing a paper on the history and evolution of SQL Server and I'm
having a hard time finding good resources that talk about the product from
it's beginning at Sybase and over the years at Microsoft. Below are a list
of links I have so far but I was hoping maybe some MVP's or Microsoft
employees might be able to point me at some better resources or tell me who
to email.

http://www.microsoft.com/presspass/features/2001/jun01/06-28sql.asp
http://www.tldp.org/HOWTO/Sybase-ASE-HOWTO/introduction.html#AEN46
http://www.microsoft.com/presspass/features/1998/6-29sql.asp
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microsoft_SQL_Server
http://www.microsoft.com/sql/evaluation/anniversary/timeline.asp
http://www.pulagara.com/sqlserver/evolution.htm
http://www.ispirer.com/doc/sqlways37/Output/SQLWays-1-087.html
http://www.informit.com/articles/article.asp?p=130898&redir=1

Any help that anyone can provide is appreciated.
Thanks,
Jason

I was at MS when they began the Sybase / Ashton Tate partnership. Perhaps I
can provide some insight. I remember some of the details and the inside info
from those days. I was asked to form a team of course developers and
trainers to build courseware around SQL Server. I did so and taught courses
based on the Sybase / OS/2 product for 5 years as it evolved to IIRC 6.5 or
7.0 when MSU folded.

I would be happy to talk to you about this. I'll be at home this afternoon.
I live in Redmond and I'm in the book.

Hi Jason

The first chapter of my book "Inside SQL Server" is the history of the
product.
I worked at Sybase from 1987 to 1992 and was there when Microsoft SQL Server
was 'born'.

Hi Kalen - I actually tried to contact you about this (last night) through
your "insidesqlserver.com" website - did you get the feedback I left? I had
a copy of your book but let someone borrow and never got it back...but I
remember the first chapter being rich with content about the history of the
product. E-mail me if you read this please - jason dot mauss at gmail dot
com

Thanks,
Jason

Yoshihiro - very cool, do you mind if I use the information from your blog
for my paper?

You know Kalen, this isn't really fair. You didn't give others like myself
a chance to plug your excellent book. :-)

Complaints aside, it is an excellent book that I was going to mention.

Sorry Greg, but I waited four whole hours to see if someone else would
mention it.
;-)

Thanks for your feedback!

Unfortunately, that site isn't kept up to date as well as I wish it was and
I think the email link is out of date . I'm planning on reviving it after
the NEXT version of the book comes out.

A better site to use to get in touch would be the site for my company Solid
Quality Learning, in my sig.You can also click on the Solid Quality Learning
link on the home page of the Inside SQL Server site.
