sql multiple databases

I have two tables in different servers that i need to do a join on:

Server1:
employees1
-employeeID

Server2:
employee2
-employeeID

How do i do do a select from both servers?
Select employee1.lastname, employee2.lastname
FROM employee1, employee2
WHERE employee1.employeeID = employee2

Why not linked servers (if SQL Server)?

I'd create a DataAdapter for each and then do a fill to two distinct tables
IN THE SAME dataset. Then just use a DataRelation to join them.
