SQL message?

Using Word 2002.
When I open a Word attachment from Outlook Express 6 I get a warning popup:

"Opening this document will run the following SQL command:
(Followed by a exclamation yellow triangle and no text)
Data from your database will be placed in the document. Do you want to
continue?"

If I reply "no", the document still opens normally.

What is this SQL question about? I do not recall seeing it before the recent
couple of weeks.

If this happens when you start Word (by opening the attachment, for
example), the likelihood is that it is caused by some obscure change made by
the latest round of Office updates. In my case, the message was triggered by
the TaskPaneController add-in (which can be removed from Word's Startup
folder without damage), but in your case it might be some other add-in that
is disagreeing with Word.
 
Thank you Suzanne. It did start after the latest Office update.

Is "TaskPaneController.dot" the file to delete?

If you have that add-in in your Word Startup folder, then, yes, you can
delete (or move) that file. My understanding is that the add-in does its job
at the outset by modifying the Registry, and once it has done that, you
don't need to load it every time you start Word. Who knew?

No, as Suzanne noted, it was the latest Microsoft Word update that did it.

In its latest security update Microsoft installed the "TaskPaneController
add-in". Deleting it returned things to normal again.

No, the update didn't install the add-in; it just changed something that
resulted in a conflict with that add-in if it was already installed.
 
I see. I do not recall installing that add-in (though I may have) which is
why I thought the update added it. What does that add-in actually do? What
am I giving up when I removed it?

Its purpose is to either enable or disable the Task Pane from popping up
unannounced. In other words, it gives YOU the choice of whether you want to
see the Task Pane when you open Word.

I personally loved the Task Pane in Word 2003 and used the utility to keep
it open all the time. But I am in the minority and most users use it to
disable the Task Pane because they hate it.

The Task Pane Controller provides an interface to all of the task pane
options. You have a task pane option in Tools/Options and there's a Reg hack
that isn't present in the Word interface. And depending on the version of
Word you are using it shows the task pane when Word starts. (There's a bug
that will cause the task pane to be dismissed too quickly if add-ins are
present.)

So it does several things, some of which are version specific, and depending
on what you want the task pane to do you may not need it at all. :-)

I'm still not sure why it triggers the SQL message -- it doesn't run any
SQL -- but I need to do some testing and figure out what's happening exactly
the next time I have access to Word 2002 and Word 2003.

I have the additional information. Namely, if I well remember (?), the
ghostly "SQL event" occurs not only at the MS Word start-up. It occures
also just after your TaskPane Controller instalation.
I mean after downloading your Add-in, I found the following files
related to in My PC:
C:\Program Files\Task Pane Controller Files\ TaskPaneController.dot -
AND - Setup.doc.

Then - I double clicked (unintentionally) on the mentioned above
Setup.doc file. In a result, the instalation procedure was repeated and
during this time I got "SQL pop-up window" with the strange questions of
the type "YES/NO?", etc. Thus, the same event as described in this
thread by Jeff occured.

The question:

Well, does it mean that in coming future we will have an opportunity to
download a modified version of Task Pane Controller, which will work
properly until the next Microsoft "invention" aimed at the possible
Office update patch - destroying once again the Beth and Bill's add-in?.

N.B. By mistake (i.e. not reading the Jeff's theme first), few days ago
I opened new thread entitled: "Word 2002: New document Task Pane -
startup problem"; From: Ajakibs (30-05-2008). Thus you can find further
information related to the considered theme. And sorry for making some
disorder related to repeating the similar subject in different
discussion threads.

Thank you for this information, it's very helpful and helps confirm what I
suspected.

I'm not sure if a new version will prevent the message. :-( I suspect the
SQL warning occurs because the Add-in modifies the Registry. If that's what
is causing it (that's one of the areas I plan on testing - I have a couple
ideas) then either MS needs to update their update or they've deemed
Registry modifications as "unsafe" and there will be little that can be done
except to override the SQL warning using a Reg hack to allow the
modification of a Reg hack. (Isn't security wonderful? LOL)

No worries. Thanks for pointing me to your thread. :-) Unfortunately I'm
unable to see it here -- I can only see posts from the last 24 hours (to sum
it up in three words: Windows Live Mail) but I did locate it on Google
Groups. It sounds like you found the solution you were looking for since one
of the objectives of the Task Pane Controller is to modify the Registry. As
Suzanne noted, if what you are after is the Registry modification then you
can use the Task Pane Controller to make the modification and then remove it
from your Startup folder.

Below, I am citing one of the most important part of it. Namely, I have

1. Using Windows Regedit utility - find the Registry subkey:

2. Go to the value named: "DoNotDismissFileNewTaskPane" and choose the
value "1" (i.e. do not dismiss) or "0" (i.e. do dismiss).

Remark: Of course, the subkey "10.0" is for Word 2002/XP users, whereas
the subkey "11.0" should be considered (in place of "10.0") by the users

1. Is it the only one Registry Hive (as cited above) that should be
considered in order to arrange "a manual" fixing of the problem. And

Sorry, but some misprint has occured in my cited above message. Namely, the
the registry subkey name should be written as follows:

"HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\10.0\Common\General"

Moreover, one has to check additionally the following Windows Registry
entry:

"HKEY_USERS\S-<heksadecimal user ID>
\Software\Microsoft\Office\10.0\Common\General";

and - once again - the subkey value "DoNotDismissFileNewTaskPane" should be
set to "1".

In the given above Registry path the <heksadecimal user ID> is a specific
user ID determined as a heksadecimal number. Thus, the above means that -
for any particular user - the given above subkey should be find using the
standard "Registry Editor > Edition > Find" function (applied to the Hive:
HKEY_USERS).

Hello,

I am using MS Word 2003 and have attempted to follow this thread as best as
possible.

I Have edited my registry to read:
HKEY\CURRENT-USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\11.0\Common\General
"DoNotDismissFileNewTaskPane" and chose the value "0" (i.e. do dismiss).

Still get the "SQL" event.

Reading on I see:

"In the given above Registry path the <heksadecimal user ID> is a specific
user ID determined as a heksadecimal number. Thus, the above means that -
for any particular user - the given above subkey should be find using the
standard "Registry Editor > Edition > Find" function (applied for the Hive:
HKEY_USERS)."

What in the world does this mean I should accomplish?
