A spywarequake infection has made a red-border-balloon pop-up appear
intermittently on my screen whenever XP runs for the past 3 months. I
need Norton Internet Security or MS Defender to have removed this. It
blocks a portion of my media viewer display frame.

There are a ton of alternatives out there that can remove SpywareQuake
- one that I recommend is XoftSpySE Anti-Spyware. Like much of the
competition, it is able to clean a variety of malware/spyware out
there, and it is constantly updated.

Read the short review I posted here:
http://www.mereviews.com/products/review/XoftSpySE+Anti-Spyware - after
that, you can choose to download their Free Scan version from that
page, or just go here:
http://www.mereviews.com/products/download/XoftSpySE+Anti-Spyware -
you'll download it straight from the company who makes it.

In the end, use the tool that works best for you.

Good luck!

Do the preparatory work here:

Then see the specific removal steps at one of these sites:

Finish your cleaning by going through the rest of the general malware
removal steps from the first link, including the finishing-up work.

I don't recommend Xoftspy. Although its rogue classification has been
lifted (see MVP and security expert Eric Howes' excellent site below),
there are so many other good antimalware apps that there's no reason to
use a program that was tainted.

It is YOUR fault !

You keep on re-infecting yourself.

You are constantly getting infected, subsequently asking for help and then ignoring the help
provided.

We can NOT help those who can't help themselves.

Quite agree Dave. That's his 4th thread on this subject!

Is it? Well, *plonk* to him then. Thanks for pointing this out. Lordy,
and look at all the groups to which he cross-posted. I just noticed
that. Definitely *plonk*.
