Hello,

I think it was on this newsgroup that I learned about parasites. I have
used Ad-Aware ever since, and I thank whoever it was that informed me. Now
I'm trying to help my daughter with her computer. We downloaded that and
found a LOT of spyware, but the program seems to be hung up in that once
having selected it, it won't let us click Next, so we can't delete it. Any
suggestions? TIA

I also had problems with Ad-Aware. Now I use Pest Patrol by Computer
Assosiates along with their anti-virus and it works great.

Ad-aware won't catch everything.

CAUTION!!!!! Before you try to remove spyware using any of these programs ,
download a copy of LSPFIX from any of the following sites:
http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm
http://www.spychecker.com/program/winsockxpfix.html
(if your OS is Win2k or XP) The process of removing certain malware may kill
your internet connection. If this should occur, this program, LSPFIX, will
enable you to regain your connection.

See
Dealing with Unwanted Malware, Parasites, Toolbars and Search Engines
http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/unwanted.htm

Note that AdAware and SpyBot S & D will each catch some things the other
won't. Also, each needs to be updated with the program's update function
before every use, even when just downloaded. There's also a lot more to do
than just those two programs. CWShredder is also available here:

**Post your HijackThis log to
http://forums.spywareinfo.com/ or the Spyware forum at
http://forum.aumha.org/ for expert analysis, not here.**
Alternative download pages for Ad-Aware, Spybot, HijackThis and CWShredder
may be found on this page:
http://aumha.org/a/parasite.htm.

If nothing there helps, please post back to this thread.

My Computer is Win XP, my daughter has Win ME, I don't think I know how to
start up in Safe Mode for either one. Would appreciate that info, thanks.

Frank,
My daughter has Win ME, would this info (about LSPFIX) still apply? I'm
going to be trying to help her "long distance" now because we were just with
her for Thanksgiving, and we've returned home. Added to the difficulty is
that she works LONG hours and doesn't have much time to fool with it.
That's why I spent large parts of the 3 days we were with her to try to fix
it myself. I had also downloaded and run CWShredder and SpyBot (and yes,
updated them first). They both seemed to function OK, but it was the
Ad-Aware that would lock up in Delete mode. Repeatedly! I even uninstalled
and reinstalled it (more than once). The aumha noads page check had found
two "serious" things the first time, but after running some of the above,
they were gone. But the Ad-Aware continued to find 300+ items, some
malware, some data miners, etc. and yet would not delete them. So it seems
things are improved but definitely not all cleared up. We did get rid of
the about.com (or whatever it was) "home page" and her regular (MSN) home
page appears once more when she goes online.

I think so, but the LSPFix site also refers to these:

http://www.bu.edu/pcsc/internetaccess/winsock2fix.html - Winsock repair
utility designed for Windows 98, 98SE, and ME.
http://members.shaw.ca/techcd/WinsockXPFix.exe - Winsock repair utility
designed for Windows XP.
http://digital-solutions.co.uk/lavasoft/whndnfix.zip - Winsock repair
utility for Windows 95/98/98SE/ME
