What do you call the programs that install by themselves when you use
IE? And what is the best program to stop them. I am running xp and ie6
but have a continual problems with toolbars being added and new programs
being installed without my permission.
Thanks....

Parasites. You need a system of layered protection to stop them: as a
minimum, use Ad-aware+Spybot S&D+SpywareBlaster in addition to your
firewall and antivirus.

See:

Ad-aware:

Spybot S&D:

SpywareBlaster:

Run SpyBot Search & Destroy (Advanced Users) or Lavasoft's Ad-aware
(Novice Users), to help is scanning and removing immediate Spyware exploits.

"Spyware Defined: Silent background use of an Internet "backchannel" connection
MUST BE PRECEDED by a complete and truthful disclosure of proposed backchannel
usage, followed by the receipt of explicit, informed, consent for such use. Any
software communicating across the Internet absent of these elements is guilty of
information theft and is properly and rightfully termed: Spyware"

Under the IE security tab/ custom, for the item "Run Active-X controls and
plug-ins" set it at "prompt" or "disable".
This may help.

Hi Scott - You might want to consider installing the SpywareBlaster and
SpywareGuard here to help prevent this kind of thing from happening in the
future:

http://www.wilderssecurity.com/spywareblaster.html (Prevents malware Active
X installs) (BTW, SpyWare Blaster is not memory resident ... no CPU or
memory load - but keep it updated) The latest version as of this writing
will prevent installation or prevent the malware from running for 878
parasites if it is already installed, and it provides information and
fixit-links for a variety of parasites.

http://www.wilderssecurity.net/spywareguard.html (Monitors for attempts to
install malware)

Both Very Highly Recommended.
