malke; with all due respect, why would you want to back up possibly infected
files, it does not make sense to me

I have no idea to what you're referring. If this is related to an old
thread, you should have kept it in that thread. As for backing up
possibly infected files, if you're referring to backing up data you
always back up data (if not already done) and you always scan that data
before putting it back on a clean machine. Otherwise, I have no idea
what you're talking about.

As for the question you asked about what Symantec told you - yes, there
is plenty of malware that Symantec products would miss. I couldn't
possibly comment on what you had, what they told you, or what they/you
did since I didn't see your computer.

Malke, thank you for your response about the issue of backing up infected
files;
I cant really agree with you as I know that plenty of malware and other
sophysticated programs will slip by norton as well as windows defender, which
in my case is exactly what hapened;
I dont want this to turn out to be a rant, howerver there really is allot to
complain about with respect to what the software and computer industy can get
away with;

we in our buisiness would have a hard time in selling a produt that is half
engeneered, why the customer would just say I'm not paying for that driveway
it's only half poured !
so how is it that sofware companies can offer opperating systems half
engeneered and impose all sorts of this needles grief on the consumerby way
of endless updates, the purchase of security programs, spyware programs etc
to make the system so large it ends up hogging all the room on your computer
to eventually make it almost unmanageable;
I'm my mind this is absolutly rediculous

I forgot to say something related to my last comment , which is this;
several years ago I listened to bill gates on TV where he was asked what the
greatest hurdle was in the computer industy;
his comment was (Keep it simple),
I would sure like to see that
Thank you so very much Rich Jones

If you truly want to understand why this is so - take the time to read
Bruce Schneiers article "How Security Companies Sucker Us With
Lemons":
http://www.wired.com/politics/security/commentary/securitymatters/2007/04/securitymatters_0419

The key point being this is a market place where the seller knows a
lot more about the product than the buyer.

(snip rant - I don't read rants)

I back up my clients' data files - which one doesn't necessarily *know*
are infected until scanned - because my clients want to not lose their
pictures, documents, and emails. In most cases the files aren't
infected. My clients would be extremely unhappy if I blew away all the
pictures of Baby's First Step without even making sure they are OK first.

You can do what you like of course.

Malke

Dear malke;
I will end these posts right now in ending you still havent adressed the
fact that some maleware and programs are undetectable, which as I tiold you
was the case in my situation,
and you are correct, the prudent thing to do is always do backups of you
documents very regularly and date them so you know if tyou have a problem you
can throw out the suspected disks and not take a chance on intalling you old
pictures
