which anti spyware is the best one to use?

My opinion, ranked by best solution at the top.

Preventive:

1. Common sense
2. Spyware Blaster
3. SUPER AntiSpyware or SpySweeper

After infection:

1. Flattening and rebuilding
2. 3, 4 and 5 together
3. SUPER AntiSpyware or SpySweeper
4. Spybot S&D
5. Adaware

/B. Nice

What are people's opinions on Windows Defender? Isn't that Microsoft's
spyware solution? I've been running it on a few computers and on one of
them recently it caught something that Ad-Aware and Spybot S&D missed.

Thanks,
Linn

There is no single anti spyware application that is 100% effective.
Most people rely on a combination of two or more different
applications, usually with one always active as the primary
preventative measure and a second one for periodic (e.g. two or three
times a week) manual scans to see if anything got by the first app.
And it is often wise to follow this up even further by occasionally
going to one of the free online scanner sites and doing another check
there.

And even then it is still possible that your computer will become
infested and require a major cleaning effort.

Good luck

Only use it for basic monitoring, not much more. It's not a very good
program, this coupled with Microsoft's history of removing notifications for
known malware without letting anybody know and siding with Claria doesn't
exactly help very much.

It does have a few positives, from my short time testing it doesn't affect
system resources much and is very unintrusive. Most other free or trial
spyware monitoring tools I've tried have had their own abundance of popups
(operation related, not ad related) or other such problems which cause me to
steer clear of them for anything other than manual scanning.
