....then again, all good things must come to an end.

Absoluetly. All three programs: AdAware, Spybot Search and Destroy,
and Spyware Blaster; these are necessary, and work in three-part
harmony. I also use XP Home.

Unlike virus scanners, Ad-aware and Spybot S&D do NOT run in the
background. They are programs that you periodically run to clean up the
crap *after* it's made it's way to your machine.

To *prevent* spyware from infecting your machine, I would suggest that
you download Spywareblaster:

http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/sbdownload.html

Additionally, I would recommend utilizing a host file. This is a good
one:

http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm

Lastly, I would also recommend adding CWShredder to your arsenal:

http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/cwschronicles.html
http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4086.html

CWShredder is an after-the-fact cleaner that will remove the insidious
CoolWebSearch infection. While Ad-aware addresses this, CWShredder seems
to do a better job of eradicating this particular nuisance.

The sample host file there is quite large
How to use it.
Please give some more clarification to
amend the file?
Thanks.

Download the .zip file and extract it to the directory appropriate to
your OS (as described on the web page I linked). Let it override any
existing host file. There is nothing to *use* -- it just does what it's
sposed to do automagically. You can open it and edit it in Notepad; the
instructions on editing it are in the file itself.
