Spyware/Virus that blocks multiple windows?

I've looked through a number of older posts from people with the same issue I'm having - Internet Explorer will suddenly not allow multiple windows to be open at once. If a second window is opened it will automatically replace the first. All of us have been given pretty much the same response (see the text pasted below) but none of it works. One user even went so far as to to completely uninstall and reinstall Windows. Since, at least in my case and I presume many of the others, no settings were changed intentionally and no programs were downloaded before the error began to occur, I presume that this is likely some sort of Virus/Spyware/Malware that the anti-virus and anti-spyware software aren't catching (believe me on this - because I've run three different up to date programs). Is there anything anyone knows about a new program of this nature? Or can you think of any other possibilities? Lastly, does anyone know of any way to actually get direct help from Microsoft for problems with Explorer? It seems that they only want you to buy a service contract or direct you to the computer manufacturer.

Thanks!

So you know what has been tried and didn't work, this is what has been advised before:

"From IE> Tools> Internet Options> Advanced> Browsing> uncheck "Reuse windows for launching shortcuts."
And... you have a program running which is blocking pop-up windows-
something like Yahoo Companion, Google toolbar, a firewall, Earthlink (or
another) pop-up blocker, etc.
You'll have to uninstall the program or turn off the feature that's blocking
new windows.
With some programs of this type, using Ctrl+click or Shift+click will allow
a new window."

Hi Ajea :-)

Try the following and see if this helps.

Open More Than One Window - Courtesy of Venkatesh

Try these steps:

Open IE, tools, internet options.
Select Advanced tab and click the [restore defaults] button.
Later, select the Programs and click the [reset web settings] button.
Click OK.

If still no joy, then do the following:

Download, install, immediately UPDATE SpyBot and AdAware, then run them all

Tried all of this, including all of the links you sent, and it still doesn't work.

Thanks for your efforts though! I'm now thinking this must be some programming glitch that Microsoft will have to figure out eventually and add to their knowledge base.

You're very welcome. Sorry I couldn't be of more help. I hope that you get
the issue resolved and back up and running properly again soon. :-)
