Does anyone else have the problem of some spyware
deactivating Microsoft's Antispyware auto-protect (or
whatever its called?)? How do you fix it? Spyware Doctor
seems to remove that particular problem but then it comes
back.

Do you have a name for this spyware ?

It will be easier to help you out if we knew what it was
causing this and may also help the MS team to make sure
they can stop this happening

Let us know what Spyware Doctor is finding and it may be
easier to fix this.

I have been struggling with that also. I'll try Spyware
Doctor. Pretty amazing that Antispyware has already been
hacked. Tough road ahead for MS or anyone looking to
design a solution.

I see a lot of jumping to conclusions here. Earlier in the beta I used to
post weekly to announcements a list of viruses that attempted to disable
Microsoft Antispyware. There are a couple of related families, but I don't
think any of them is widely distributed in the wild.

I think much more likely is a bug in the beta1 product.

I'd appreciate it if everyone in this thread would try an update reinstall,
as a starting point:

start, control panel, add or remove programs, Microsoft Antispyware, change,
update

Far enough, I tried your recommendation with no success.
Treid to uninstall and reinstall and it still has the
same issue. If I go into Real Time Protection section, I
can not activate any of the three. What's odd is that all
3 show as active on the main page. I realized there was
an issue when I stopped receiving alerts. All settings
are correct.

OK - lets go a little deeper:

1) uninstall Microsoft Antispyware
2) delete the installation folder (typically c:\program files\microsoft
antispyware) and all subfolders. You will lose access to any quarantined
items and to recorded settings and preferences.
3) reinstall Microsoft Antispyware.

I tried it and it still did not work. Attempted it again
and this time changed the name of the directory and stil
nothing. Another strange thing I noticed was that none of
the checkpoints are listed when you go into the real time
protection menu.

Nothing picked up by MS Antispyware or Norton.

JA

1) Open up a command prompt (start -> run -> cmd)
2) Type in the following "regsvr32 msvbvm60.dll" (without the quotes).
3) Close and re-open Windows AntiSpyware

Bill,

That worked, what caused the problem? A

Thanks for the help....

Keep fighting the good fight....

And I need a better chart of all the "presentation symptoms." It's very
easy to recognize the "missing system explorers" but for some reason when it
presents as "deactivated checkpoints" I don't put the symptom together with
the cause. Maybe I can figure out a way to cause this issue
intentionally--maybe by unregistering that .dll? so that I can see this in
person, and thus perhaps remember it better.
