Has anyone out there managed to find a spyware detector/scanner that
will work, without installation, from a USB thumbdrive? Perhaps a hack
for spybot or adaware, etc.? I just happened to think about how
wonderful it would be to run a detector without having to do a full
install...

Insert the USB drive, start your scanning software, select the USB drive for
scanning, scan.

Most people store data on a USB drive; spyware needs an operating system to
run. For the same reason, many (if not most) spyware scanners default to
scanning the system drive, although the user can select additional drives to
scan.

Adware SE and BHOdemon.

After a formal installation, just copy over it's tree to the removable Read-Write media.

I do it on a ZIP 250MB disk.

Adaware is said to work if you install it normally to your hard drive and
then copy the program (including subdirectories) to the thumb drive. See
The Ultimate USB Key http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,1895,1846805,00.asp

There is new software standard in the works called U3 for enabling programs
to run from thumb drives. In the future there will be more programs capable
of this, but right now the choices are limited.
