spyware or virus

When I upgraded my son's computer to xp evidently we lost Norton. Anyway, he
has been having bad problems. When we click IE we get some awful page and
lots of pop ups for spyware removal. It won't let us change the home page. I
installed Comcasts security manager, scanned and removed spyware. It did not
work so I purchased and ran ZeroSpyware2004. Still there I called comcast and
they suggest it could be a virus. What is the difference and how do I remove?
