Hi

I have constantly been getting pop up messages that claim there are critical
errors in the registry and direct me to a website registry fix or similar.

I have installed Syware but these messages still keep appearing - any ideas?

1) try restarting Windows in Safe mode, by pressing the F8 function key
before the initial Windows screen appears. Do full deep scans with
Microsoft Antispyware and with your updated antivirus application, until
each completes a scan without finding anything.

2) Post (perhaps judiciously modified so that it isn't easy to click) the
URL you are being referred to here--this'll give folks here a clue about
which further remedies are most likely to succeed, if the above does not.

Do you have XP SP2 installed?

Is this occuring when you are running a web browser or when no web browser
is running?

If SP2 isn't installed and this occurrs when no web browser is running, what
you might be seeing is a result of having Windows' Messenger service running.
This service can allow people from outside your system to "pop-up" dialog
boxes come up on your system advertising products and the like. The
simpliest solution is to install SP2, as Messenger service is disabled by
default.

You can also take these easy steps to rid yourself of these annoying pop-ups:
1. Right-click on the My Computer icon on the desktop
2. Select Manage from the context menu
3. Double-click Services and Applications
4. Double-click Services
5. Double-click Messenger
6. Click Stop to Stop the process
7. Select Disabled from the "Startup type:" list box
8. Click Apply
9. Click OK

computer!!

Thanks for your comments,

This only occurs when I am online. One of the popups directs me to
www.regofixup.com

I am using XP and have downloaded SP2, however when I try to install it I

I have followed your directions re closing messenger and wait to see if this
has been succesful ( the pop up is headed "MESSENGER")

Thank You for your help

SP2 would have fixed this problem for you, I believe.

I take it you downloaded the network install version of SP2, which is quite
large?

Can you send some details about the installation file--name, size, date?

It'd be nice to see the error message precisely--it might be recorded in the
System Event log--not sure--or maybe you can invoke it again?

This should be something we can help you get past--and you'd be better off
for it.
