Greetings everybody,

I've had a couple friends that have managed to get their PCs infested
with malware to the extent that it is not stable at all. They will
boot, but then all the malware/crud takes over. I've tried looking for
a piece of bootable software that will allow me to mount the hard drive

and scan for any kind of crub--viruses, spyware, etc.--to no avail.
Does anyone have any sugguestions other than reload the OS? Both
machines were XP Home--one of which didn't have SP2 :(....One crudware
that I was able to identifiy was drsmartload.exe.

All suggestions appreciated!

Chris

You might find it helpful to boot into Safe Mode to do your repairs and
scans. Of course there is never a guarantee that you will be able to clean a
computer and restore original performance and eliminate all malware/spyware.
Booting into Safe Mode will most likely bypass most or all of that junk from
loading and also help in removing because the malicious processes hopefully
will not be running. There is a great program called Bart's PE that can do
what you want which allows you to create a bootable version of XP from your
or their installation disk and it allows you to add plug ins and is already
very functional. Of course installing SP2 and making sure they have an
antivirus program that keeps itself current with updates automatically and
is configured to scan emails, etc would be beneficial. SP2 also has the
built in popup blocker. I would also install Spyware Blaster on their
computers and make sure it is updated. It is a preventative program for
spyware. If you have not seen it yet Trend Micro offers a free malware
detection and removal program that does not need to be installed. It just
needs to be run from a common folder that also contains the unzipped pattern
file. --- Steve

Cool stuff, Steven. Thanks a bunch!
