Hi,

We just got this "Spyware Cleaner".....V 1.05) that showed up on Firefox,
offering to remove malicious stuff. I downloaded the program and immediately
it found 55 "high risk" offenders and it had hardly got going when I decided
to abort the scan. Then it asks you to register in order to remove the
objects. My trusty Adware SE found 19 'mimimal risk' objects.

This Spyware Cleaner seems suspicious. What do you think? The Spyware
Cleaner's Website is: http://www.myspywarecleaner.com/sc/?hd

Opinions welcome.

http://www.spywarewarrior.com/rogue_anti-spyware.htm
....is an encyclopaedia of "Rouge/Suspect Anti-Spyware Products and Web Sites"

SpywearCleaner/myspywarecleaner.com is descibed as:
Aggressive, deceptive advertising (1, 2, 3, 4, 5); uses insecure ordering
page (1); variant of NoSpyX, SpyVest, Spyware Slayer, Spyware Stormer,
Spyware Wizard, & X-Spyware (1); Ad-aware knockoff - (Note: other domains
associated w/ this app include: spw2a.com/sc/, spw2f.com/sc/,
spw3e.com/sc/, spw4.com/sc/, spw8.com) [A: 6-26-04 / U: 4-6-05]

So you've got a knock-off of other spyware programs.

For quality anti-spyware programs see:
http://www.spywarewarrior.com/asw-features.htm

I personally use Ad-Aware and Spybot Search and Destroy for scanning, and
Spybot S&D and JavaCool's SpywareBlaster for proactive inoculation.

Do pass this information on to others who might benefit - it's what one
could call a "trusted" site where you can get the low-down on such programs
to see if they do what they claim to :-)

HTH

Checked the T&Cs on their so-called website (very basic IMO). It states:
"Spyware Cleaner will show you a reminder screen about the adware or spyware
found on your machine periodically until you purchase a license and clean
your machine of the unwanted software, application, or code, or you
uninstall Spyware Cleaner from your computer."

So, even if you clean your machine by other means, the Spyware Cleaner
software will still remind you that you still have spyware. very dodgy

Furthermore I gave the program a try on a (clean) Virtual PC and it came up
with innocuous registry entries as "Extreme risk spyware". Fortunately,
from what I can tell it does not seem to be spyware itself.

Uninstall it, and give the "good" software on spywarewarrior.com a whirl.
