Josh

i recenty started to recieve a lot of pop-ups w/ out
getting on the internet. ironically, one pop-up appeared
that was telling me i had spyware on my computer. i
freaked out. i downloaded the SpyHunter program ( the
people that sent the pop-up) and ran the scan.
the results:
1parasite in memory
176(!)parasites in registry
64parasites in cookies
and 9parasites in my files

The part I need the help on: I know that registry is a
fragile thing, so I don't know i should delete the
files. One thing in the registry is called BackWeb and
it says that it updates files and doesnt look at
personal info.

This is bad karma because I never renewed my Norton
Antivirus subscription if i renew it now, SOMEONE COULD
FIND OUT MY CREDIT CARD NumBER!!!

HELP FROM AN EXPERT Is NEEDED! EMAIL ME CUZ IT WILL BE
HARD TO FIND THIS ADRESS AGAIN.
well i guess ill put this under favorites...
but please reply ASAP!

Josh;
Try one of these INSTEAD of Spyhunter, they are free and very good.
Both of these will take care of any spyware for you.
Check this link:
http://www.aumha.org/a/noads.php
Run Ad-Aware (free version) or Spybot to check for spyware:
http://www.lavasoft.de/ (Update if you already have it)
Or
http://spybot.eon.net.au/ (Update if you already have it)

After this is resolved:
Run spyware detection application weekly

It is not safe to be without an antivirus application.
You need to get one immediately.
Install an antivirus application
Update it weekly
Run it at least weekly

Install or enable a firewall IMMEDIATELY:

Are the Popups Internet Explorer or are the windows titled
Messenger Service - there is a difference.
If the title bar contains the words Messenger Service do
the following for XP:
go to the Start button,
Settings and then Control panel,
Administrative tools and then Services.
In Services, scroll to find the service called "Messenger"
and double click it. in the middle of the Messenger window
click the Stop button and just above it change the drop
down from Automatic to Disabled. CLick the Apply button.
Otherwise if it is internet browser pop-ups my only
suggestion is to download POW from www.analogx.com
Hope one or both works for you!!

Katherine;
That is a BAD fix for Messenger Service ads.
The proper fix is to install a firewall.
Your fix leaves the computer vulnerable since there is no protection.
Messenger Service is a valuable tool many use.
Like many tools, it can be exploited.

No need to pay for the fix.
For Messenger Service ads:
You need to install or enable a firewall:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=330904
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/using/howto/communicate/stopspam.asp
Disabling Messenger Service can be a good idea, but it does not solve
the real problem.
The ads are not the real problem, the ads are only a symptom.
The real problem is open ports that allow unwanted traffic into the
computer.
Disabling Messenger does nothing for the open ports.
The firewall controls the traffic.

Internet Connection Firewall will not work if you have AOL.
AOL is not compatible with Windows XP Internet Connection Firewall
(ICF)
If you have AOL, you should contact AOL and/or get a 3rd party
firewall:
