Me again

Well, the spyware group seems to be asleep, so I'll try here

Just downloaded a trial version of the above from Internute

Amongst other things it highlighted chktrust.exe as a baddy (in
WINNT\system32) - but if I look at that file in Windows Explorer it tells me
it's a Microsoft file, and Google searches show its a file that checks
validity of stuff.

Adaware and Spybot do not pick this up.

Spysubtract also alerts several registry entries that the other two didn't
find - in HKCU...../domains - things like blazefind.com, skoobidoo.com etc

Since I haven't used spysubtract before, just want to check, is it safe,
does anyone have any comments on what it's found?

Are there any sites that compare the different adware programmes?

Cheers

I am of the opinion that a lot of these so-called PAY spyware programs
deliberately flag perfectly good things....or invent them.......just so you
will be freaked and pay for their program, instead of using the freebies.

Colour me very suspicious of this type of flagging.......and can anyone back
me up?? Spysubtract is the one that bought out CWS......so we are watching
that one. There has been an update this week to CWS, and at first there
were problems....now it apparently has been fixed.

Just my 2 Cdn. cents worth........Heather

Appears to be a true statement, Heather. For those who haven't seen
the list yet:

Dump IE and most of the worry goes away. ;-)

Interesting site......thanks. Too many of these so-called pay spyware
proggies popping up and naming all sorts of things, but you have to pay in
order to get rid of them!! Snake oil!!

I hate to admit that I took your advice and have been using Firefox a good
part of the time. TomV who often pops in here (under a pseudonym) helped me
out with that one......but probably still some more fine-tuning to be done.

Still stalling on putting XP Home on here.....care to drop in and help out??
Snowing and below zero celsius, but I would give you a hot toddy to help
out, grin.

Cheers, Heather

The WWW is rife with Oil of the Snake.

Aha, good. There's not a lot of tuning to do. A few extensions, maybe.
PrefBar. The Web Developer's toolbar. That's about all I use.

Never on my computers. A dual-boot with Win2K and some flavor of Linux?
care to drop in and

Ooooohhh. Umm, er .. <looks for car keys/>

Same weather here. I probably won't ride the motorcycle today.

<lol> I think you're taking longer than me to decide, come on girl go for
it. <g>
Going broadband here in the new year and getting all 3 machines networked
<g>
Joan

Easy for you to say, lol!! You had 2 or 3 gurus to help you with it. I
wanted to dual boot as you did, but beyond me without their help. Sigh.

Maybe I will do it as a Xmas pressie for myself. So you are going to go for
broadband, eh? And a router? I envision a lot of calls to Holywell and
London......(snicker).

Cheers....Heather

<lol> I'm doing it the lazy way and getting my local friendly computer
shop to do the networking and setting up the broadband <g> Mike said I was
getting lazy but I told him and Noel at least then I can't screw anything
up <g>
