hi,

somehow managed to get that spysheriff thing on my computer...ran norton antivirus first which didnt get rid of it, then did the three programs suggested before - Smitrem, Ewido and CCleaner...thought this had worked as my desktop had the spysherif logo removed, but then while using the internet, it came back and im not sure what to try next...
have downloaded hijackthis, and this is the log it produced...

They're still there bud.

Are you sure you removed them? - (Had to ask)

If you're sure you did then try booting up in SafeMode (Whack F8 during bootup) and see if you can remove them in SafeMode.

Let me know.

seems to be that if i run the scan after opening up explorer they come back into the log...ran this one before opening explorer:

is that of any help?

Right well the above log is clear as you said it would be.

Well i found this on *shhh!* another forum so it's only worth a try i guess...

Here goes...follow the steps closely, if you're unsure just come back.

Spysheriff is malware and should not be used to clean a PC from spyware/ adware/ malware. It's pretty bad e.g. if you try to use System Restore you will find that Spysheriff erased your restore points, so that won't work.

Instead follow these steps:

1. Open task manager by pressing Ctrl-Alt-Del, and click on the "Processes" tab. Look for Spysheriff there and kill the process if you see it. If you see a process named "winstall" (winstall.exe) then delete this one also.
2. In the control panel goto "Add/ Remove Programs" and remove the "SpySheriff" program. If it says that it cannot uninstall, then you still have it running. It will uninstall once it's not running.
3. Your desktop background will not be restored by that uninstall. Go into the registry by starting RegEdit.exe from the start button
4. Look for this key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\A ctiveDesktop
It will have about 6 values stored that disable certain things. Delete this whole branch ActiveDesktop - the system will work with default values afterwards.
Also delete this branch in your registry:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\S ystem
5. Look in your root directory for a file named winstall.exe. Mine was in c:\ and 24064 Bytes in size.
This file is scheduled to execute each time you boot and it will re-install Spysheriff.
Delete that file.
Update:

There may also be additional executable files that were created at the same time as winstall.exe. Those files may be named 'winstall.exe' and 'ibm00001.exe'. You should delete those files as well. If you have this file ibm0001.exe please see the other article regarding ibm0001.exe.
6. Restart your system.
Done.

cheers mate

there was nothing in the processes tab under spysheriff or winstall (closest to these was winlogon.exe)...

deleted the files in the registry, and while there, saw there was this folder:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\SpySheriff - havent touched it yet, but should i delete this?

cant find a file called winstall.exe anywhere...or the ibm file either.

thanks for your help

tried another tactic...manually delete all the files that norton picked up as being unsafe this morning. this seems to have done the trick pretty much. thought this had done the trick, but having then reconnected to the internet, found that i still got the pop-ups (although after putting pop-up blocker on high security this seems to have stopped), and it has changed my home page back to its search function...it also seems to create false hyperlinks on pages that i visit.

any suggestions on where to go from here???
