I have an old computer with spybot and MS antispyware installed. Do I need
both or can I uninstall spybot as I feel this is slowing my computer down? Do
these 2 software conflict?

Hi Lucy,

Make certain to not to select any of the pernament protection for Spybot and
DO NOT immunize the system, as this can interfere with WD' Real-tme
Protectiºn.

Does this mean I should uninstall SpyBot? I already immunized the system
before I installed MS antispyware. How do I unselect the permanent
protection, do you mean the blacklist?

I respectfully disagree somewhat with Engel. I disable teatimer in Spybot
(which is its active monitoring component, that might intefere with MSAS's
monitoring), but use the immunize feature (which is a passive component that
sets kill bits in the registry, like Spywareblaster) and resident helper (BHO
blocker). I have never found any conflict with Spybot (minus teatimer) and
MSAS.
To disable teatimer, go to advanced mode, tools, resident and uncheck
Teatimer.

SpyBot and MS Anti-Spyware do not conflict *if* you do not have "real time"
scanning activated within SpyBot.
For help in doing so, please visit the official SpyBot Forum for help.

What sort of problems would one expect? I have two systems with MSAS and
Spybot with TeaTimer enabled and have not noticed any oddities.

I wouldn't think a newer computer would encounter too many problems but my
old computer even has problems with freezing when I use messenger so 2 active
spy software running at the same time must slow the process down some I would
think.

Thankyou, this was great advice and even better instructions on the "How To"
of spybot.

While no one is an absolutely authority on anything, my best guess would be heavier
than normal resource use and as I said already, conflicts, since Tea Time and MSAS
scan real-time - though you may not have noticed any oddities, I run SpyBot and
MSAS as well and do not run Tea Timer.

About 10 months ago, the imunization was conflicting with the HOSTS file,
since then I D/C Spybot S&D.

Today I use Ad-Aware, CWShredder, SpywareBlaster, WinPatrol (Real-time
Protection), and never have any problems that all.

I use the two of them together, but I don't use Teatimer. In fact, I also
don't use the BHO either. The other immunize feature just adds registry
entries for blocking bad websites, activeX controls, and some cookies.
These registry entries are standard mechanisms provided by Windows. The
only conflict that could occur is if product A adds a registry entry and
product B removes it.

Hi Folks

Rosenfeld's statement is 100% correct !

Spybot is installing shields in IE just like Spywareblaster is doing.

Personaly i protect myself against Spyware as follows :

- On Guard : MS Anti Spyware
- Shields : Spyware Blaster
- Scanning : MS Anti Spyware + AdWare SE (free edition) + Spybot (Feeware)

Before scanning run Window Washer to remove all cookies ...

Norman is running as Anti Virus ...

That's it !!!
