I have had Spybot S & D on my PC for quite some time now.

Today I was shocked to hear from someone that Spybot is a distributor of
Viruses!!

Could anyone throw light on the subject, please?

Douglas

It is false !

That is assuming you get it from legitimate locations. It is possible that it could be
obtained from a 3rd party that may insert an infector

This is the same reason you *only* get MS patches for MS Operating Systems and software from
Microsoft and nowhere else.

SpyBot S&D is a very useful adware and spyware removal tool. The
manufacturer does not distribute viruses.

However, there is a well-known worm with a very similar name:

W32.Spybot.Worm

Trend Micro reports that the file "sdhelper.dll is a trojan virus
ADW_SDHELP.A this is a component of Spybot S & D

Hi,

I have Spybot S&D on my computers, I usually go to Trend Micro once every
few weeks to do an online scan and it has never detected a virus or trojan
on my system from Spybot S&D. So unless it was downloaded off of a third
party site that could have altered the original program to include the
trojan, it is virus free. You should make sure whenever you download any
specialty software like that, that you download it off the developers site,
not some third party site.

Also I have installed Spybot S&D on a bunch of computers and part if my
basic maintenance is to visit both TrendMicro and Pandasoft sites for their
free online scans and my systems always reports clean. So make sure you
download the authentic version not some third party site download.

I downloaded the app from security kolla website installed and still Trend
Micro AV reports the file "sdhelpder.dll" as a trojan virus.

Hi again,

Well, I just went to
http://housecall.trendmicro.com/housecall/start_corp.asp and did an online
scan. I have Spybot Search & Destroy on this computer, with the teatimer
active as well. The scan did not find any virus at all. The Spybot S&D has
the latest updates, both for English and Japanese and the online virus scan
did not detect anything. I ran it on 2 other computers that also have it
installed and running the teatimer as well and no virus was found.

Jeff

Hi again,

Did a search on my computer, it does not have that sdhelpder.dll file, nor
does that file exist on any other computers of mine. So either that program
was modified and placed on some third party site or the person had some type
of virus already that inserted it after the install.

Jeff

Well, I downloaded its from the sites Spybot Search & Destroy web site
recommended, also downloaded it from sites Majorgeeks recommended, scanned
the down loads for virus`s, installed it on a few test computers, rescanned
them with both the installed and online virus scanners and it did not find a
virus nor did a search of the computer files find `sdhelpder.dll` in any of
the folders. All I can assume is that site the hosts a download for Spybot
Search & Destroy either modified it themselves or is carrying a modified
version from somewhere else.

Jeff

I don't recommend to anybody a full scan with an online machine. It's not
enough.

Download the full app and then scan your machine for complete revision.

Hi,

I did the scans with 4 different AV`s. I used two online ones, Panda and
Trend Micro, then scans with Nortons corporate edition 8.1 and Avast Home
edition. None of the scans detected any virus`s from the full download and
install of Spybot Search & Destroy from Spybots recommended sites and
Majorgeeks sites.
