Ideas anyone why the Spybot program refuses to run on XP machine? McAffee
was even disabled but that made no difference. Is there a setting in XP I am
not aware of that blocks Spybot? The XP is the Home Edition.
The Spybot program was downloaded and setup today so it is the latest and it
did not replace a previous edition. Thought I would try the program out .

What happens when you try to run it? Do you get any messages? Exactly what
component of Spybot are you trying to run? Need more info.

Sorry it is not actually my machine, but my friends. No messages come up at
all
It is the complete search and Destroy Program. She clicks on the .exe and
nothing happens.
She has installed, UNinstalled and downloaded fresh copies a few times now
in the last few hours. All with the same result.

Have you tried running it in both easy mode and advanced mode?
And are you signed in as administrator?

I've had that same EXACT problem. I believe it to be one of M$
Critical Updates but not sure which one. I'm playing around with 'em
but still can't figure it out. Hopefully the author of the program is
aware of this (I've already done my part and emailed him on it).

Or it may be a combination of updates or other factors.

If you are talking about it opening for a second or two, then closing,
that is a common problem on some systems, but there is a solution on
the spybot FAQ. It's the first question asked on the Faq.

I am having the same problem with my Spybot program which I am running
on WinME.
It also started after I downloaded a critical update: Cumulative
Security Update for Internet Explorer 6 Service Pack 1 (KB832894)
I also had a message from my Norton Anti-virus about a bug it found,
it mentioned SPYBOT here is the message:
*Source: bbsmartstubfal.exe
*Description: The compressed file bbsmartstubfal.exe within C:\Program
*Files\Spybot - Search & Destroy 1.1\Recovery\BonziBuddy.zip is a
Adware *threat.
*Click for more information about this threat : Adware.Bonzi

I deleted the bbsmartstubfal.exe file and so it was either the
critical download or the deletion of bbsmartstubfal.exe that caused
Spybot to stop working because those are the only two actions I took
between Spybot working and Spybot not working. I get no error
messages, Spybot never appears, there is a brief flashing on the
screen of the program and then it disappears and lists as "not
responding" when I control alt delete.

I have deleted and reinstalled the most recent version of Spybot and
still no luck.

I've had that same EXACT problem.

HERE IS THE SOLUTION!! I found it at forums.net-integration from a
user named Rene:
Hello @all,

This could happen if you enable all of the Program automation settings
(to auto-close the program after scan on program start will be removed
in the next bugfix).

And due to a bug not reproducable but happening, during some installs
random instead of the default settings are applied. In that case, all
Automation options could be enabled, forcing the program to scan and
exit automatically afterwards. As this will not even allow you to
enter the program, you need to reset the settings. There are two ways
to do this:

1. You can delete the configuration file (which is named
Configuration.ini). Where it is located depends on your Windows
version...
(The application data folder is hidden. Run Windows Explorer, in the
menu bar select "Tools", "Folder Options", switch to the second tab,
and there select "show hidden files and folders". Hit OK. Now the
application data folder is visible).
For Windows 95/98, the file is located in C:\Windows\Application
Data\Spybot - Search & Destroy\.
For Windows ME, the file is located in C:\Windows\All
Users\Application Data\Spybot - Search & Destroy\.
For Windows NT/2000/XP, you will find it in C:\Documents and
Settings\All Users\Application Data\Spybot - Search & Destroy\.
Either delete that file, or edit it (for example in notepad), and set
all the Automation values in it to zero.

2. You can download a small tool that will do those changes for you:
http://spybot.eon.net.au/files/resetsettings.zip

This information is also available in our FAQ:
http://www.spybot.info/index.php?page=faq&detail=23

If that does not solve your problem, your system is maybe infected by
CoolWWWSearch.SmartKiller (v1 and v2). It is a new, real ugly variant
of CoolWWWSearch. When running, it will close every browser window you
use to visit a large list of anti-spyware-sites, and even will close
Spybot-S&D and some other anti-spyware applications as well.So if your
copy of Spybot-S&D (or the anti-spyware application of your choice)
closes a few seconds after starting, or your browser closes whenever
you try to visit an anti-spyware site, check our CWS.SmartKiller
removal utility: http://www.safer-networking.org/files/delcwssk.zip

The mentioned zip files are backup files. If something does not work
after deleting by Spybot S&D you can restore these files by the
integrated restore function. Some other programs recognize these as
threats - but don´t worry about that...
