Spurious external DNS requests

I've set up a small network for a client using a W2K
server (with AD and DNS configured) and a combination of
W98 and XP clients. I've also set-up WINS and set DNS to
query this. I've also installed Norton Antivirus Corporate
Edition on the network.

Currently, this client does not use the Internet, although
I've installed a 3Com ISDN Lan modem and configured the
network to point to it as the gateway.

However, even though I think that everything is set-up
correctly, the server initiates quite a large number of
external DNS queries (DNS server is set to use root hints).

Any ideas on how to prevent these spurious requests?

Thanks
Des

On the Forwarders tab check the box "Do not use recursion"
And make sure all clients only have local domains listed in their DNS search
list.

Hope This Helps
============================

Kevin,

This behavior could also be the result of a single label domain name. That
was why it was stopped in SP4, unless SP4 is installed on this machine.

1. An UNEDITED ipconfig /all from both domain controllers, that will vastly
help us in giving you a better diagnosis.
2. The AD DNS domain name (as it shows up in your ADUC).
3. What service pack is on both machines.
4. Any Event log errors (Event ID #s please).

Thanks!

Thanks for the replies guys.

I havnt been able to visit the site for a few days, but
there is only a single domain controller involved. This is
running Win 2K server with SP4 installed. The domain name
is TheCompanyName.local as they do not have an external
presence. I've installed WINS to take care of the Win98
pc's and set DNS server to query WINS. I havnt enabled DNS
forwarding as I am working on the assumption that the root
servers will take care of any external requests.

However, I've also noticed on another similiar network
that the server appeared to be initiating a good deal of
external DNS queries (this was obvious from checking the
3Com ISDN Lan Modem). I dont know what is generating these
as the modem also shows genuine DNS requests from the
clients when they wish to access the internet.

I'll check these sites over the next few days and see if I
can come up with anything else.

Thanks again,
Des
