I guess this is a silly question.but how do you know if you have sp1 or sp2
or no sp at all. I know I don't have sp3.

Here's one way to know:
Control Panel > System > General tab
Some other ways:
Open My Computer > Help > About Windows
and
Start > Run > type: winver > OK

Your message headers reveal that you currently have a fully patched version
of SP2:
