I cannot seem to find any spreadsheet capability with the
Windows XP I have just purchased. Can anyone tell me
where I find an Excel like function in XP?

It doesn't come with Windows as a built in programme. If you want a simple
spreadhseet and office suite I suggest buying MS Works. If you want a more
complex one you'll need Office XP or Lotus, or even Star Office which is
very cheap and MS compatible.

was xp preloaded on new computer or upgrade from other os?
preloaded .....check here.....

start...
all programs...
microsoft works...
spreadsheets...

upgraded os.....buy spreadsheet software.
there are shareware out there ....maybe freeware too.
search google.com or try nothingbutsoftware.com

Windows XP is an operating system, not a suite of office programs.
Spreadsheets, word processors, and the like must be purchased separately.
However, there is a couple of low level word processors included with
Windows XP. One is called "Notepad" and the other is called "Wordpad".

I use Microsoft Office XP, which includes Microsoft Word and Microsoft
Excel.
 
Notepad is not a low level word processor... It's a text editor which is
different. It can only edit plain ascii text files...
 
Notepad processes words, albeit primitively, and only with text files.
Therefore it is a word processor. Its all a matter of semantics.
