I have just put a copy of microsoft excell 98 on to my Windows XP computer.
I then downloaded a large file from a friend.
The file opens fine. But every time I open this or any other file held in (My documents) I get a message saying = There is alredy a file open with this name. Please close the file or rename this file.
To my knowledge I dont have any other files open and when I try to rename the file I get the same mesage.
The files all open ok. But i am fed up with having to delete this message all the time.
Can anybody help? Thanks.

Has this happened every time you opened a file, or did it just start after you downloaded that file?

Do you have this copy of excel on any other computer? and does it work fine on that pc?

This hapens every time with every file.

But I have a external hard drive and when i back up a file to that the message dose not show up.
IE when I open a file on my external hard drive all is well.
Also my wife uses this copy of excell on her computer at work with no problems at all.

Which version of Excel was the file created in? I'm assuming V98 as otherwise I doubt if it would open, but just curious.

Have you tried moving or copying the file to your C drive from My Documents and opening it from there?
