Hi

I'm sure I once ran some sort of tweak that enabled an increase in the speed
at which sub-menus (eg Start/Programs/Etc) opened, but I can't remember what
it was...Anyone here know how to do it?

Thanks

You can specify the interval from the time the cursor is pointed at a
menu until the menu items are displayed by editing the applicable
registry subkey. For more information see:

Registry Guide for Windows
Change the Menu Show Delay (All Versions)

Note: Changing or deleting registry entries can cause you to have to
reinstall the whole operating system. Before you run the Registry
Editor I recommend that you understand how to backup, edit and restore
the registry. In particular, I suggest that you read the KB Article
section titled "Export Registry Keys" and then, before you edit the
registry, export the keys that you plan to edit. For more information
see the following Microsoft Knowledge Base Article and/or Registry
FAQ.

Easier to just download TweakUI from the Powertoys for Windows XP and
set it there. Plus you get lots of other tweaks, too.

Depends on user's skills. ;-)

Regardless of how good the user's skills are, if you can use
TweakUI to accomplish a change instead of editing the registry,
it's always easier, not to mention safer.

Using such tweakers may be as dangerous as making registry changes
without proper knowledge... ;-)

I'd prefer to know exactly what's going on ;-) - registry makes me aware
what have been changed - using such programs doesn't give me that
information.

Well if you do it the 'correct' way, it's pretty straight-forward -
1.. Click Start, click Run, type regedit. and then click OK.
2.. On the Windows menu, click HKEY_CURRENT_USER on Local Machine.
3.. Click the \Control Panel\Desktop folder.
4.. Double-click the MenuShowDelay value, type a number representing the
menu display delay (in number of milliseconds) in the String box, and then
click OK. You can enter any whole number between 0 and 4,000. If you use an
entry of 0, there is no menu display delay.
5.. Quit Registry Editor, and then restart the computer.

Yes - we know what value changes menu delay :-) - see post
;-)

AFAIK 0-999 (milliseconds).

Then we have very different opinions.

If that's your choice, it's fine with me. But I would never
recommend that to someone else; to me safety and ease of use are
much more important.

Oh yes, we have. ;-)

It's almost impossible to work /configure, fix, recover/ with Windows
systems without using registry editor - one should use it but wisely ;-)
But in one way IMO you are completely right - when someone is very
inexperienced user - it'll be better for him to use some "tweaker" (if
exists such program witch lets to the fix problem).

I'm certainly not suggesting that nobody should *ever* use the
registry editor. Neither TweakUI, nor any other such tool, lets
you make all the configuration changes that may be desirable.

However, TweakUI lets you make many of the tweaks that people
commonly want to make. When you *can* use TweakUI, you should,
since it's both safer and easier. When you can't, and the only
way to accomplish what you want is editing the registry directly,
then that's what you have to do to accomplish your goal.
