I have a client running XP Pro (Ver. 2002 w/ SP1). They have several
machines which experience a 'COM port failure' when usuing dial-up
modems to client sites. To overcome the problem the machine needs to
be re-started before the user dials out to another site - the client
is becoming increasingly frustrated! Unfortunately, this failure
appears to be sporadic in nature and cannot be replicated.
When the fault occurs, the following error is written to the system
event log:
"The serial driver detected a hardware failure on device
\Device\Serial0 and will disable this device.
For more information, see Help and Support Center at
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp."
The link supplied does not provide any further information.
However, several of the users have reduced their CPU speed from 2.2GHz
to 1.8GHz and the frequency of the port failures has reduced (but not
stopped altogether).
As mentioned, all client machines are running XP Pro (Ver. 2002 w/
SP1), dialling out via a 28.8Kb MultiModem (MultiTech Systems, Model
no: MT2834ZDXK). I'll be upgrading the modem driver tomorrow (if there
is an upgrade available), but I would appreciate any feedback the list
has about possible problems with XP that might cause such a problem.
Kind regards, Nick
