spoolsv.exe in win2k server

Hi, we have a windows2k server with sp4 running our print server. the
spoolsv.exe process takes up a LOT of memory...sometimes upwards of 700,000k.
Could there be any general reason why this is happening?
Also, we sometimes get print jobs that error out and just sit there in the
queue - we either have to kill the process manually, or stop it in the
services plug-in which usually doesn't work - it will time out while stopping
it and we have to restart the server for it to work again.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Chris.

I have been experiencing the same problem on my print server. It seems to do
this during the morning hours. I thought it was a certain printer but after
deleting it and everything associated with it I still have problems. I have
checked the Spool/printers folder that have been mentioned in other
discussions and there is nothing there to delete. I have removed the folder
from realtime virus scanning without any improvement.

I have spent three + days working on this. If anyone has any ideas please
share with us.

Thank you,
Cheri

We had a similar problem, ended up calling PSS as I suspect we went through
the same process as you. I think they supplied a funky program which told us
which driver was at fault.

Sounds like dodgy a printer driver... if possible use the microsoft printer
drivers, even if you have reduced functionality for a while (i.e. an HP
LaserJet 4 drive will work just about any HP laser)

Writing a batch job to stop and start print spooler service and run it as a
scheduled job might give you breathing space.
