Spoolsv.exe hanging system when printing to network printer

Can't seem to find a Windows XP Printing newsgroup, so i'm posting here.

When attempting to print from XP Pro to a shared network printer,
occassionally the system hangs. Looking in the task manager, the
spoolsv.exe seems to be taking all the CPU. On killing the process the
computer returns to normal usage, but fails to print.

Anyone know of a bug fix, or how to reinstall the spool service on XP?

The shared printer is a HP LaserJet 1000, if that makes any difference.

It doesn't seem to be a problem on other Win 2000 machines in the same
network.

Many thanks

Dan Williams.

Is the XP box at SP1? Saw similar problems that SP1 addressed, I think the
KB article that described the symptoms was
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;321364&Product=winxp.
One of the other symptoms was extremely high network traffic to the server
(same packets over and over again) and high CPU utilization on the server as
well. You might want to check to make sure your drivers on the workstation
and the server are at the same/correct levels. Deleting all mapped printers
and adding them sometimes addressed the issue as well.
