Spooler not running!

I have a 4 month old IBM with an XP o/s and a Lexmark Z-
51 printer. Initially, my printer worked OK except there
was no setup screen (for changing cartriges, etc), so I
installed the CD program which came with my printer and
which worked fine on my 5 year IBM with a '98 o/s. At
that point the printer function became inoperable and my
computer does not only not recognise my printer, but I
cannot add a new printer as all I get is a message saying
the Print Spooler is not working! I have contacted
Lexmark, IBM, and Microsoft (the latter don't want to
know me as my XP o/s is OEM!)and nobody maintains they
know anything about how to solve my problem! At this
rate, Microsoft can take their XP system and stick it
where the sun don't shine as far as I'm concerned as I
never had a problem this frustrating during my 19 years
of using their 3.1,'95 and '98 o/s's on my various IBM's!
Help, help, if anybody out there knows how to make the
print spooler work.

Also, for many printer models, the printer manufacturers have chosen to not
implement all of the features (e.g. "setup screens") of the 9x series
drivers into their Windows XP drivers. Unfortunately, there is not much you
can do about that except to complain to the printer manufacturer.

In some cases, the equivalent function is provided in "utilities" or on a
Printer's Property page (e.g. a "Services" tab).
