Spontaneous Restarts in XP

John Matthew

My PC will reboot withour warning. The Device Manager
says there are 2 devices UNKNOWN with a question mark.
I did add two pieces of hardware: A HP scanner and a HP
desk jet printer. They both work fine. I did disconnect
them to see if the Question Marked devices would go away
but they didn't. WhenI clicked on the Question Marked
decives its says the MFG is unknown. So I thought maybe I
have 2 bad drivers somewhere.

I tried using the Roll Back option but it says there are
no drivers to roll back too.

I have disabled these two devices and it hasn't
spontaneous rebooted since (2 days so far).

Any help in determining how I can locate these two bad
drivers so I can delete them.

Is it possible to have a driver installed and no device
to use it? Would this cause this problem or do you
actually have to have a Hardware only to cause this
problem.

Your time is very much appreciated

www.hp.com gets you to the latest drivers for your
device and XP. If you have a yellow exclamation mark
beside the device then right click and choose uninstall
and see if XP detects it on reboot. To turn off the
reboot issue go into system\advanced\startup and recovery
options and uncheck the restart on error box. Do some
configuration. Good luck.
.
Thanks for your reply.

I do have Question Marks near the 2 devices under the
UNKNOWN device icon.
I do right click and it lets me unistall or disable. If I
doaable then when I do restart the dialog boxes telling
me XP found new hardware doesn't come up, it restarts
normally.

What I would like to do is found the mysterious hardware
or its drivers and delete them. I am stuck since I can't
find out how to get XP to identify them by MFG or id
number of some kind.

Thanks again for your time on this.

Please see my post under Where Do I Start. CWatters response led me to HPOPAR05 driver showing at
all? restarts. I'm in the process of redownloading drivers for my HP Officejet t45. Hope it helps us
both.
