Spontaneous Reboot

I am running XP PRO on an EMachines 4150,512Megs RAM, P4
1.5Ghz processor. Every once in a while, and often at
the most inconvenient time, my machine will reboot
without warning.
It has happened while working in Word and Excel. It
happens when I am playing a word game on a Yahoo site and
it has happened several times while playing Spider
Solataire. It happened again last nite. I left my
machine on with some work open, hoping to complete it in
the morning. When I came back to the machine this
morning, it had re-booted.
Would appreciate any suggestions.

Hey there,

I've seen this happen at times when my CPU gets to hot.
You should try and make sure that you've got good cooling
for your system so that air can circulate reliably. Also,
check and make sure that you've cleared out the dust inside
your system if it hasn't been cleaned out for a while.
Excessive amounts of dust can also contribute to this problem.

Hope this helps. If you notice anything else that might
contribute to the problem, just post a reply.

I've seen similar symptoms on my home-built pc recently.
It was shutting down spontaneously. On one or two
occasions, if I left the power switch on, it would reboot
at a later time. After several days of this, the
computer wouldn't even turn on. It ended up being a
power supply problem--I had a cheap power supply that
came with the case I purchased. Once I replaced the
power supply, the symptoms I described disappeared.

I agree as well. This is also another really good
remedy. As they always say (not sure who exactly but...),
having too much of a good thing is always better than not
having enough. When I built my new system, I specifically
picked out a PSU that I knew would last me for a long
time...hence, I got a 550W Antec TrueControl one. Now,
I'm not saying you should get the same thing but if it is
the power supply, make sure you get one that's a little
better than your needs. If you have a P4, I think
anything in the 400-500W range should suffice.

Hope this helps.
