Splitting large files- Chainsaw

I need to split/rejoin zip and exe files that are 2-5 MB in size.

I planned to use Chainsaw. I have Ver. 3.6, looked for later version. I found the
website is dead, Google found version 5.X.. It turns out this uses the msi
installer, I don't,

Does Chainsaw 3.6 work with exe files?

Is there a later version than 3.6 available as executable or the older MS Install
Shield/ Wise installer?

TIA

http://www.frankenwandern.de/software/chainsaw.html works for me - it shows
v3.7, no installer etc.

Contact me by email and I can send over a copy of v3.6 if the above doesn't
work for you.

Thanks, Adam.

That got me to the current Chainsaw home page, the 3.7 downloads all run in W98Se
with error "linked to kernel32....", tried several times.

As above, I already have 3.6, thanks.

Current Version is 3.7 - get it from

The Chainsaw program with version 5.X is an IRC bot, that runs on top of
the .NET framework!

It works with any file you choose to split...

There's nothing to install - just unzip and run.

Thanks. I ran the 3.7 d/l from the link you mentioned, still get the error screen
in my earlier post, have emailed the author.

I will try 3.6 that I have and see how it works.

Enjoy.

Post here if you have any questions about it.

Al:
I ran Splitter, it split the files automatically to transport on a floppy, which I
did.

But when I wanted to recombine- problem.

Select Unsplit, browse for files, it can only find *.tpl files.

But the files it split before are *.000 and *.001, so it can't see them to
recombine. The split file was a large exe file.

Advice?

Yes, knew that, that's why I asked about the later version.

Just got a reply from the author, may by helpful for others:

Subject: Re: Chainsaw 3.6 and later
Chainsaw 3.6 works with all types of files and there is practically no size limit
( 2^64 Bytes). Indeed Chainsaw 3.7 does not work with Win 95 or 98 anymore which I
stated that on its website, albeit there exist a number of download sites that
are not updated to this information yet. I would continue to use Version 3.6 on
your system. The new 3.7 only has better error handling and is smaller in size.

Ok. Here's how it works:

If you look at the .tpl file you'll see that the entire path, from
ther drive letter down, is saved. That's where the program expects to
find the *.00x files. Just make a path on the targer machine that's
what the program expects, copy the files there, and it should work.

If you think running from the current directory is better I can modify
it to not save the path. It was just something I whipped up a few
years ago when I needed to transport large files and USB drives hadn't
been invented yet. It worked for me then, but I'm always open to
suggestions.
