Splitting AVI Files

Good Evening
I wish to split several AVI files into 10-20 second clips for a training dvd.
Currently I use MM2 on XPSP2
My problem is the length of time it takes a relatively short clip to load
(approx 5 - 10 minutes for a 300-500Mb file) and the other problem is the
process I go through to split
1. Import file
2. Play file to point of splitting
3. Split file into A (short segment) & B (what is left of AVI)
4. Delete the B section
5. Save A as an AVI to computer
6. cntrl Z to bring back B
7. Delete A
8. Start again on new section of B

This process can take 6 or 7 minutes to save a 10 - 20 second clip
My PC isnt state of the art but its fairly good - AMD 2.0GHz 1.0Gb mem and
plenty of disk
Questions
Any better method of doing this? & Is it normal for the importing of files
to take so long?
Thanks in advance

This is what I do ... not that you have to do what I do.

1 Import the file.
2 Play to the point of splitting (either by letting it play
or scrolling across .... scrolling is much faster)
3 split file into a and b sections
4 move to section b and repeat as necessary, only deleting
the pieces I don't need (this being done in the collection
window).
5 When finished and ready to save individual files, drag
them one at a time to the timeline and save them.

Note: If you are going to do it this way, create a project
file and save it often, even if nothing is on the timeline.

Alternately, you can let MM spllit the file for you when you
import it (click the make clips box). It probably won't
split right where you need it to, though, so for me it's
more or seems like more work.

Hi Chris
Basically Walter's got it.
There is not a faster way in Movie Maker of splitting a file up really, you
need to save them one at a time to your computer and that takes a little
time, but you can speed up part of the process.
Assuming the clips you need are short clips from the same video you can
split them in your collections, as Walter suggested, instead of in the
timeline.
This way you save the step of splitting and deleting again and again because
they are all split up and waiting for you in your collections.
Drag one to the timeline and save it to your computer, this will still take
a little time.
Start a new project and drag the next one to the timeline and save it to
your computer.
Repeat the process until you have them all saved.

This is still a time consuming process but we cut a few minutes from it by
doing it this way.
