I am tring to split some stored video. It is all stored in WMV format. I
spilt the video and drag to preview and nothing, its says it is playing. I
have to drag the full clip to the timeline to split it further, only then
will it play in preview.

I'm not sure that I understand your question
but maybe the following info will offer some
ideas:

"Splitting A Clip In MM2.1"

Drag the video/audio clip to the
Timeline.

Play the video/audio by clicking the
"Play" button under the view screen.

You will see the Playback Indicator
(vertical line) advancing across the
timeline.

Click the "Pause" button at the point
where you wish to trim and type...
Ctrl+L or click the "Split" button at the
bottom of the view screen.
(you can also make adjustments by
dragging the Playback Indicator)

Make as many splits as you want and
remove the unwanted clips by right
click / delete.

I have a big video file of about 60 minutes with audio that I recorded
with MM2.1. i want to turn this 60 minute video into 6 videos of 10
minutes each. I went through and created 6 clips out of the one big
video but how do i save each individual clip as its own independent
video file. I cannot find the option to save individual clips as
their own stand alone videos. They are all named the same thing as
the one big file was named something like Video_10 or soemthing like
that.

thanks

Simple...just remove all but the segment you
are currently trying to save as an individual file.

Whe you save...you can enter any name and
save location you wish

To save as a .wmv movie file...
Type...Ctrl+P to open the Save Movie Wizard /
Choose...My Computer /
Next /
Enter a Name and a Save Location /
Next / Next.
Wait while the movie is saved /
Finish...

To save as an .avi movie file...
(and several other options)
Type...Ctrl+P to open the Save Movie Wizard /
Choose...My Computer /
Next /
Enter a Name and a Save Location /
Next /
Show More Choices /
Other Settings /
Open the drop window and choose...DV-AVI /
Next /
Wait while the movie is saved /
Finish...

John,

Thanks for that, however maybe I wasnt clear in my description. I have
always been able to split clips in the preview panel, much easier than
dragging a long piece to the timeline, I split the track in preview but am
unable to play it in preview any longer, it simply goes blank. each clip has
to be played in timeline not in preview, this is not what I am used to so
something must have changed.

Does this only happen with new clips or does it happen with clips that
previously worked ok?

Graham

Topcat,

I am having the same problem. I split clips like I always have, but now the
newly split clip does not play. Specifically, I hit play, although it says
"Playing", the video does not move nor does the audio start. The audio will
finally start about 15 seconds later, but the video never moves.

I too have to pull clips into the timeline to know where to edit.

I wanted to try to uninstall Windows Movie Maker and reinstall, but I don't
know how to do that.

Suggestions?

How to uninstall MM and reinstall.

Format hard drive, insert windows xp and re-install. ;-)

It's part of windows so you can't.

What format are your clips?
What changes have you made to your pc since it last worked?
Have you tried system restore back to when it last worked?
