Splitting a clip problem

After splitting clips, for some reason, the clip fuction is greyed out. I am
usually able to make another clip only by saving the project and reopenig,
after which it works OK. I will appreciate some feedback.

The clip button (Ctrl / L) should be live if a
movie clip is on the timeline and the dividing
line is not on zero or a previously clipped
position.

IOW...just move the dividing line and the
button should become live. You can drag it
with the square at the top of the line.
