is there a way to split my screen to have half the screen show a web site
and the other half a program such as excel ?
thanks for any help
 
Yes. Windows remember the size and placement on close. Size them, and close
them (IE and Excel) in the place and size you prefer.
 
In addition to Mark's comments, a quick way to resize to
half the screen is to have only those two programs running.
Click on the program you want on the left half of the screen
(this makes this the active program.) Right click on the
taskbar and then select with a left mouse click "Tile
Windows Vertically." The selected program will fill the
left half of the screen and the right will be filled with
the unselected program.

Sure. That's what windows are for. Open IE in one window and Excel in
another. Then resize and reposition the two windows so each takes up
half the screen.
