split option grayed out

Sometimes I can use it and sometimes it is gray and I can not.

Sometimes if I just wait for a couple minutes (up to 15) it comes back so I
can use it. Sometimes I have to close WMM and reopen to get it to be an
option.

I have always been able to split and resplit and resplit again if I want
with no issue except giving it a second to do it.

Has something changed or What am I doing Wrong??

Thanks in advance

Are you working a large, complex project or
large source files? it sounds like you are
reaching the limits of your system resources.

The project is not large - maybe finished will be about 20 minutes.

I have continued working on it all day and have found if I go back and forth
between views it will work continually. (If the split is gray I switch to the
other view and it is not) That does not make since to me - but what ever
works :)
Not sure if this will keep working though - any other suggestions?

I have no idea what is going on, maybe a virus protector starts up or
automatic updates for something starts, something going on and off taking up
resources -
- I may be on and off reaching limits - if that is possible ???
(do you know how I can fix that if it IS the issue?)

Please let me know what you think,
Thanks

Sorry...but you lost me. Intermittent issues
are very hard to correct.

If you continue to have issues the following
list may offer some ideas...

FWIW...video editing applications run best on a
machine that is well maintained and fully updated.

You could be reaching the limits of your system
resources. Running Error Checking, Defrag and
Disk Cleanup on a regular schedule might help.

And...disconnecting from the net and closing all
programs including your virus scanner before
opening Movie Maker may free up some resources.

Adding more RAM, increasing the size of your
Paging File and maintaining a hard drive that
has 50% or more free space can help.

And you may have compatibility issues with your
source files...the following article may be useful:

File type compatibility with Movie Maker
http://tinyurl.com/v8tee

It's also possible that you have an issue with a
corrupted or outdated video driver.

Try reducing your Graphics Hardware Acceleration
as per the instructions in the following article.

(272193) PI: How to Troubleshoot
Graphics Issues
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=272193
(scroll down to:
Microsoft Windows 2000 and Windows XP)

If it improves the issue, you need to search the
support website of your Video adapter's mfg. for
an updated video driver.
