split audio from video

I used a digital camcorder to record. I am currently trying to overlay a
picture in my timeline as the audio from the previous scene continues but the
picture stops. Is there a way to split the clip into an audio part and a
visual part so that I can do this easily? If not, is there some way to
accomplish my goal?

==============================
Drag the movie clip to the Audio/Music
track on the timeline. Now you can mute
the audio in the Audio track.

What if I want to mute the visual part and keep the audio and then overlay a
picture where the visual was?
Thanks,

=======================
In timeline view...
Drag the Movie to the Video Track
and right click/mute the Audio track.

Next...drag the Movie to the Audio/
Music track. Just be sure to drag it
all the way to the left so you won't
have dead air at the beginning.

If you want to save the music as a
separate .wma file...
Drag the Movie to the Audio/Music
track and go to...File / Save Movie File /
Next / Next / Next / Finish
