When I start up my computer, I get a black screen for a
few seconds. Can anyone tell me how to put a splash screen
there? I run Win XP Pro.

Thanks
Jim

Hi Jim,

You can assiegn a bitmap to be shown there. Click on Start >> Run and type
REGEDIT. Navigate to:

HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Control Panel\Desktop

And in the right pane double click on the value 'Wallpaper' and type in the
full path to the bitmap of your choice and click OK. Close the registry
editor and reboot to see the changes.

Thanks for getting back to me. It came on for a split
second just before the welcome screen. That's not where I
want it. I want it at the begining of the start up. It use
to be Gateways logo. Now its just a black screen that I
want to put something else there.

Thanks again
Jim

Hi Jim,

I am a bit confused at this point. When you turn on your computer, the BIOS
splash screen comes up and that cannot be changed. Some BIOS have the
feature where you can turn off that spalsh screen, but it cannot be changed.
After that the Windows XP boot screen comes up (with the scolling
thing...blue or green depending on Windows XP Home or Professional edition).
This can be changed but is HIGHLY recommeded not to because it can pose a
security risk. Changing this logo requires editing core system files and
doing so incorrectly can render the system in-operable.

I told you how to change the picture that appears after this for a short
period of time. Please clarify as to which logo are you wanting to change.

The black screen with the POST info? Some OEMs will add a splash screen
here. If your system came with Windows pre-installed, check your BIOS
settings for a setting to turn it on/off.

I don't know of any way for a user to add or change one. At this stage of
the game, there is no operating system loaded and there is no file access
occurring. The screen output here is the doing of the system board's
BIOS/CMOS.

Thanks for getting back to me. I guess it's the bios
splash screen I want to change. When I got the computer
the screen was Gateways logo that came up right away. I've
since reformatted my hard drive and installed Win XP Pro.
Now a black screen is there instead of the Gateway logo.
I've worked on a few computers and have seen different
splash screens at this spot. I'm also talking with Gateway
on this subject, but that's like pulling teeth. I guess if
it can't be done, it can't be done, but I find it hard to
believe.

Thanks again for your time.
Jim

In Intel's BIOSs it known a Quite Boot. But it's not black but has system info on it.

Last few motherboards I've had have come with programs that flash the bitmap into the bios.

Gateway, that's a joke. They want me to reinstall Win ME.
I don't think so. It's only a 10, 15 second show. I can
live with it. But hey, thanks alot for your help. And you
too David.

Later..
Jim
