Spellchecking within text box following merge

I am unable to spellcheck text that has been brought into text boxes after a merge. Can anyone help with this.

What kinds of "text boxes"? We are talking about mail merge, I assume? Which version
of Word?

Right, and *what kinds of "text boxes"? How were these
created? In Word, this could be three or four things, so
you need to be very specific.
